Nickel.nc, a new nickel for a new world
To enlighten and nurture the country's choices relating to the nickel sector, this is the objective of the "Nickel.nc, a new nickel for a new world" work cycle initiated by the government. Presented on October 8th by President Thierry Santa, this approach intends to bring 120 stakeholders around the table in order to build a shared knowledge of the sector.
For the first time, all nickel-related players, including the citizens, will be consulted on the issues related to this "fundamental activity for the future of New Caledonia", underlined the President of the government.
Already underway, this broad societal consultation called "Nickel.nc, a new nickel for a new world" will continue until the end of the year. “This innovative participatory method should enable us to “make our nickel socially responsible, environmentally sustainable and economically efficient" highlighted Thierry Santa.
As the first step in a long-term approach, Nickel.nc will allow all actors of the sector to have a voice: institutions, State, associations, research centers, professional organizations, miners, metallurgists, subcontractors, administrations and Caledonians. The goal is for nickel players to "exchange information in order to identify the expectations of each one, but also the knowledge or the shortcomings of each other, as well as, the points of convergence that could exist."
To achieve this, six working groups were formed around six themes: social and environmental responsibility; support for the administration; optimization of resources and reserves; skills development; economic benefits of the sector; and the fund for future generations. Within each of them, stakeholders are invited to freely share their practices, experiences, data, etc., and to present their ideas, visions and constraints.
“This work cycle,” he continued, “is a process that aims to shed light on the issues in a neutral way, to promote the image of New Caledonia as a land of ethical nickel, which respects men and women, the environment, and which benefits the economy and the population of the country. "In this sense, Nickel.nc follows previous work, such as the Mineral wealth development scheme or NC2025. This initiative will ultimately enable elected officials to draw up, with all cards in hand, the nickel strategy of tomorrow.
