TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS
Port Infrastructure in New Caledonia
Maritime activity in New Caledonia is organized around the infrastructures of the public port of Noumea and a few secondary ports, whose activity is strongly linked to the nickel sector. By its total traffic, the port of Nouméa is tenth among French ports in 2017 and second among overseas ports. In 2019 maritime transport fell by 5.2% which is linked to shipping companies changing their strategies.
The Port Authority development program represents an investment of 20 billion XPF (167.6 million EUR), it should be finished by 2022/2023. This work involves the extension of an existing commercial wharf, the construction of a wharf to accommodate two large-capacity liners simultaneously, the creation of a barging area and the extension of the cabotage area. The first phase, currently underway, concerns the construction of an eighth berth which will be 250 meters long. Once the work is completed, the total length of the trade quay will be one kilometer. This will be followed by dredging of the access channel in the large harbor.
