A historic government agreement in the development of photovoltaic energies
The government of New Caledonia has given its approval for a call for projects with the objective of setting up an energy production of 130 Megawatts, based solely on photovoltaics by 2025. Six additional megawatts are also authorized for “innovative projects”. A decision that falls within the framework of the ecological transition of the archipelago, a strong will of the government team.
This is a major breakthrough, it is the largest call for projects ever made in New Caledonia in renewable energies. As a comparison, 130 Megawatts represents half of the energy consumed in the whole of the southern province. To this photovoltaic project, 6 MW for "innovative projects" will be added, as the government is calling for various green energy projects, focused on hydroelectric production, biomass or biogas.
For individuals and professionals, the government has authorized a share of independent photovoltaic electricity production.
The municipalities of Koumac, Poum and Canala will thus be able to launch their photovoltaic farm, and produce up to 11 MW of electricity. Individuals will be able to equip their roofs with solar panels, up to 4 MW of the global production.
Finally, professionals consuming more than 250kW of electricity will be authorized to use the roofs of their docks or infrastructures as photovoltaic support within the total production limit of 4MW. Christopher Gygès, government spokesperson, welcomed this agreement: "We are really in the midst of an ecological transition in New Caledonia, and that is a source of pride".
